Setting Up Your Home Practice

To create a comfortable spot for home yoga and meditation practice, there are a couple of simple things you can arrange to make your practice more likely to last.

To begin with, choose a quiet, clutter-free spot in your house. Place your mat and cushion there, maybe a blanket and any props you might need like a block, strap, cushion or something you have at home as an alternative.

If you can use the same place each time you practice, and even leave your mat and cushion there, you will find it easier to start, and will be less likely to procrastinate over your practice.

Try to practice at the same time every day. If you know you have a set time for your practice, it's much easier to get started and stick to it.

Try a shorter practice to begin with. Even 5 or 10 minutes is absolutely fine to start with! If you aim for a full hour right away, you will most likely become a little disillusioned because it's much more difficult to fill an entire hour with yoga when you are by yourself.

Take some time to find a sequence or practice which you enjoy the most and feel comfortable with. (There are many amazing teachers who post online - I will add some links for you later.) And then set an intention to do it - even if it's only for for 10mins. And even if it is the same practice every time.

Make sure your devices are switched off or on silent mode, and perhaps set a timer or place a clock or watch nearby so you can keep time. Maybe close the door and leave pets on the other side of it. Cats and dogs have a way of wanting to do yoga with you. :)

Consider adding a heater to the space. Keep the temperature comfortable and adjust lighting to a soothing level; using candles can create a calming atmosphere. Play soft music or nature sounds to enhance relaxation.

Finally, personalize your space with items like incense, essential oils, or meaningful decorations to inspire mindfulness and relaxation during your practice.
